What Are Map Files?
Minecraft Bedrock maps are saved worlds that you can download and play. They usually come in the .mcworld format — a packaged file that contains the entire world data. When you open a .mcworld file, Minecraft automatically imports it into your world list. Some maps are distributed as .zip archives instead; these need to be extracted manually into the correct folder.
Trusted Sources for Maps
Download maps only from reputable sites to avoid malware or incompatible files:
- MCPEDL — Large community with many Bedrock maps, addons, and skins
- MinecraftMaps — Curated collection of adventure maps
- CurseForge — Official modding platform with Bedrock maps and addons
Installation on Windows
On Windows, you have two options:
Auto-Import (Recommended)
Double-click the .mcworld file. Minecraft will open and import the map automatically. The map will appear in your world list under Play.
Manual Installation
If you have a .zip file or the auto-import fails, extract the map folder and place it in the minecraftWorlds directory:
%AppData%\Minecraft Bedrock\Users\Shared\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds
Press Win + R, paste the path, and press Enter. Copy the extracted folder (with level.dat inside) into this folder.
Installation on Android
On Android, you can use the .mcworld file or copy files manually:
Open with Minecraft
Download the .mcworld file, then tap it. Choose Minecraft when prompted. The map will import automatically.
Manual Copy
If using a .zip, extract it and copy the world folder to:
games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds
This folder is inside your Minecraft data directory. Use a file manager like Files by Google or Solid Explorer to navigate there.
Installation on iOS
On iPhone and iPad, use the Files app:
Download the Map
Download the .mcworld file (e.g., from Safari). It will save to your Downloads or Files app.
Open with Minecraft
In the Files app, locate the .mcworld file and tap it. Select Open in Minecraft or tap Share and choose Minecraft. The map will import.
Installation on Consoles
Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch have limited support for custom maps:
- Marketplace — Use the in-game Marketplace to download official maps and worlds
- Realms — If you have a Realms subscription, you can upload a world from another device and play it on your console
How to Verify Installation
After installing a map:
Launch Minecraft
Open Minecraft Bedrock and go to Play.
Check the World List
The map should appear in your world list. Tap or click it to play. If it does not show up, see the Troubleshooting section below.
Maps with Addons
Some maps require behavior packs or resource packs to work correctly. Many creators bundle these addons inside the .mcworld file — when you import the map, the packs are applied automatically. If the map description mentions separate addons, download and install them first using our addon installation guide.
Troubleshooting
Common issues and solutions:
Map Not Showing
Close Minecraft completely before copying files. Ensure the folder contains level.dat and other world files. The folder name does not matter, but the contents must be correct.
Wrong Version
Some maps require a specific game version. Check the map page for compatibility. Update Minecraft or use a compatible version if possible.
Corrupted Download
If the map fails to load or crashes, re-download the file. Try a different browser or disable download managers. Verify the file size matches what the creator states.
